Ninety Six National Historic Site

Here settlers struggled against the harsh backcountry to survive, Cherokee Indians hunted and fought to keep their land, two towns and a trading post were formed and abandoned to the elements, and two Revolutionary War battles that claimed over 100 lives took place here.



 The Basics


Hours:

Visitor Center & restrooms are open daily 8 am to 5 pm.

Gate closes promptly at 5 pm, but if visitors park outside the gate they are allowed to stay until sunset.

Grounds are open daylight to dusk.

Closed on New Year’‘s Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day

Black Swan Tavern/ Log Cabin:
The Cabin is only open on special occasions & during Living History events.

 Directions

From Interstate I-26

Heading North
At the Newberry exit, take Highway 34 to the town of Ninety Six, South Carolina (about 35 miles). Turn left at the second traffic light onto Hwy 248. The Park is located 2 miles south on your left.

Heading South
At Clinton (exit 51) follow Hwy 72 toward Greenwood/ Coronaca. At Coronaca, turn left onto Hwy 246/ 248 toward Ninety Six. Hwy 246 will branch off, but follow Hwy 248. The Park is located 2 miles south of the town of Ninety Six on Hwy 248.

From Interstate I-20
Take exit 5 onto US Highway 25 north. Follow the Heritage Corridor signs to Epworth. Turn right onto Epworth Camp Road. It will dead end onto Hwy 178. Turn left onto Hwy 178. Follow the Park signs and turn right onto Hwy 248. The Park will be about 4 miles on your right.

From Interstate I-85 (Greenville)
Take SC Highway 25 south to the stoplight at Hodges. Turn left onto Highway 246/ 248 toward the town of Ninety Six. Hwy 246 will branch off, but follow Hwy 248 to the town of Ninety six. The Park is located 2 miles south of the town on Hwy 248.

From the town of Ninety Six, South Carolina
Follow the Park signs. The Park is two miles south of the town of Ninety Six on Highway 248.

 Things To Do
 

Indoor Activities:

View our 10 minute video "Ninety Six: A Frontier Crossroad" (played on request) on the History of Ninety Six before you walk the Historic trail.

Explore our small museum that features artifacts found at the site and those typical of the era.

Outdoor Activities:

Walk our 1 mile Historic interpretive trail. Ask for a self- guided map brochure in the visitor Center. The trail winds its way through the battlefields and town site of Ninety Six. It begins and ends at the Visitor parking lot. Horses, bikes, skateboards, etc are not allowed on the trail. Trail is handicap accessible, but watch for inclines.

For $2 you may rent our audiotape entitled, "Walking Tour of Ninety Six National Historic Site" and player. The self guided tour takes approximately 45 minutes, while the walking tour audiotape takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. The tape & player must be returned to the Visitor center by 5pm.

There are several other historic & non- historic trails throughout the Park. Ask about them in the Visitor Center.

A Picnic area is available near the Black Swan Tavern/ Log Cabin by Visitor Parking.

There's also hiking, bird watching, nature hikes & wildlife viewing.
