Tybee Island, Georgia Travel Guide

Complete Vacation, Recreation and Tourism Information

Tybee Island, Georgia is a small barrier island with a vast and interesting past. Tybee is said to mean "salt" to the Native Americans that once called the region their home. As years passed, pirates became frequent visitors to the Island, searching for a safe place to hide treasure. Tybee Island played a critical role in the Civil War, and thankfully, much of this important history has been saved.

Today, most visitors arrive at this understated seaside resort for a week worth of R&R. Many different lodging options are available, as Tybee boasts a variety of hotels, resorts, historic B&Bs and Inns. Several are located oceanfront, along Tybee's 3 mile beautiful beach. This is the spot for those who enjoy sunbathing, wave riding, fishing, or just strolling along the water break. The Tybee Pier & Pavilion is perhaps the best spot to enjoy Tybee's unique atmosphere and catching incredible views of the island. Festivals and events (including live music) take place here throughout the year.

Those looking for a bit of adventure will find Tybee Island has what they need. Deep-sea fishing, dolphin tours, kayaking, and bicycling are just a few of the most popular activities. Bird watching is ideal here. In fact, Tybee Island is part of the Colonial Coast Birding Trail, and its acres of salt marshes attract a variety of birds- some of which are endangered. Tybee is perfect for bicycling too. The railroad bed that once connected Tybee Island to Savannah has been redesigned to into a lovely crushed-stone trail. The Old Savannah-Tybee Railroad Trail is 6.5 miles long, and an excellent way to enjoy the natural beauty of this region. Walking, jogging, or bicycling the trail makes for a fulfilling afternoon.

For more excitement, visit Little Tybee Island. This small island, just south of Tybee, is only accessible by water. Camping is allowed here, and the opportunities to view wildlife are endless. Many companies offer trips to the island. For those who want to learn more about the delicate ecosystem of this region, a visit to the Tybee Island Marine Science Center is well worth the stop.

The exciting history of Tybee Island can be told through the artifacts and exhibits found at the Tybee Museum. The historic Tybee Lighthouse offers more information on Tybee's past, and has the distinction of being the oldest and tallest lighthouse in Georgia. Visitors who enjoy history should also stop at Fort Pulaski National Park. The park not only offers insight into the Civil War, but also includes a picturesque marsh that is home to a variety of wildlife.

Tybee Island is a barrier island, located just 18 miles east of Savannah.
